Domains, Hosting Websites Info
Here's the levels of a website
- Own a domain name by purchasing thru a registrar
- Name Server (DNS server or NS records for your domain (usually the domain registrar will be your initial DNS server location)
- Purchase a hosting package/plan to host a website
- Optionally use a CMS system (Wordpress, Drupal etc) to make creating/modifying the site easier
- Hook an analytics account to your site so you can see who's visiting, how they found the site, what did they look at on the site etc. Make sure the web developer shares access to that analytics account with your google account
- Setup Google Search Console (previously webmaster tools) to see what Google Search's opinion is of the website. Mobile compatibility, resubmitting website to Google Indexers etc
Things that need regular monitoring/checking:
Google Search Console
Google Analytics
Don't let web developers tell you to:
Change Name Servers/login to your domain registrar account.
